Our story

A little cafe on Emmerson Terrace with a lot going on

“Cook proper breakfasts, pull proper coffee, and make everyone who walks in feel like a regular by the second visit.”

That was the whole idea. What began small grew fast, and the move to our Emmerson Terrace premises gave us the room we had been waiting for: a bigger kitchen, a cosy reading nook, space for long tables, and a corner for the florist.

We are independent, family-run in spirit, and proudly part of Washington. Everything possible is made here. The cakes, the quiches, the sausage rolls, the chilli jam and the granola all start in our kitchen, and the whole menu is available to take away.

Mickey's Place

Nothing good goes in the bin at the end of service

Every day we cook fresh, and every day there is something left. Rather than throw it away, our leftover pies, sandwiches and bakes go to Mickey's Place, a local pay-as-you-feel community cafe here in Washington.

It costs us nothing but a few minutes at close, and it means good food feeds people who need it. If you have ever wondered where the last quiche goes, that is where.

We also team up with MVMNT Culture on a community run club that finishes at our door, so the miles end with breakfast and coffee. Read more on our events page.

Workshops and playgroups

The cafe is at its best when it is full of people doing something together, so the quieter hours belong to the neighbourhood.

Creative and floral workshops

Evening and weekend sessions run in the cafe with our in-house florist and guest makers. Coffee and cake included, no experience needed, everything you make goes home with you.

Relaxed daytime playgroups

Mornings set aside for little ones and the grown-ups who need a flat white and a sit down. Buggy space, high chairs, and nobody minding the noise.

Dogs are properly welcome

Not tolerated, welcomed. Water bowls out, a friendly hello at the door and a doggy sausage behind the counter for the well behaved ones.

Made here, not bought in

Cakes, cookies, quiche, sausage rolls, granola and chilli jam are all made in our kitchen, and dishes can be tailored for gluten free, vegan and veggie diners.

In our customers' words

Class little business. Food banging, staff lovely. Something for everyone, classic breakfast stuff done well and plenty of options for more foodie types. Reasonably priced, quality coffee.

Delightful service, delicious food, pancakes were to die for. Coffee was truly the best I've had, made to my specification as I'm fussy.
Vicki S.
Food is delicious and fairly priced, the staff are really pleasant and, as someone with coeliac disease, I find the staff are very clued up on gluten free options.
Keith H.
Great find, perfect food, service and environment. Dogs are welcome, and he loved his doggy sausage, 10 out of 10.
Mary N.
A rare find that perfectly balances a cosy reading nook with a great space for a casual meeting.
